The actor's craft

This citation uses 'craft' as a capacity that entails the capacity to manage one's inner feelings.

Norman Mailer: Hitler and the human ego - International Herald Tribune:

Actors, for example, often self-destruct because they turn their assertiveness inward, against themselves; Mailer, a sometime film performer and director, is fascinated by the actor's craft. His bellicose bravado seems to be a stay against the dissolving of his personality and -- not always successfully -- against self-induced harm.
