The two wood openings last night were very interesting events, both in different ways revealing how wood as a material is good for keeping secrets.
Andrew Wood talked about the techniques he developed to allow the inner forces of indigenous timber like redgum to gain expression. While we are familiar with the glorious colours and beautiful textures of native timbers, Andrew has found ways of expressing its natural form as well.
And working with very non-indigenous timbers, Hamish Hill has been able to re-use materials from the Melbourne Town Hall organ to create useful furniture, each with a story to tell. Here he is showing the visiting MP Sophie Mirabella his secret drawer, in a secret compartment, in a secret wardrobe.
