Tactile Arts Board?
In late news, the Australia Council has approved a name change from the Visual Arts/Craft Board to the Visual Arts Board. This reflects the recent inclusion the New Media in its responsibilities and an attempt to simplify rather than extend its name. While regrettable that the word 'craft' is a casualty of this inclusion, it continues to exert ever greater influence in visual art practices. The handmade is opening new forms of creative expression in painting, drawing, design and moving image. However, we still await the day when there will be a Tactile Arts Board, for those art forms that engage the body, not just the eye.
