The Lost Art of Letter Writing

It's certainly worth visiting Counihan Gallery in Brunswick for Kristen McFarlane's show The Lost Art of Letter Writing (until 1 October). Kristen was a graphic designer before taking up glass at Monash, and she demonstrates a wonderful feel for the printed word. Like many young makers these days, Kristen has created this exhibition as a homage to her grandparents and their lifestyle. There's much made of the rich meaning in handwriting, versus the rudimentary nature of messaging today. The show sits a little too comfortably in its nostalgia, perhaps. Might there be ways craft can work with communication technology, rather than against it. Nonetheless, its a very significant body of work and the glass postcards are particularly delightful.
