Wangaratta Textile Project

Not too long ago, we worked together with Wangaratta City Council, Wangaratta Gallery and Culture Victoria on a textile residency project that introduces two artists, Andrea Komninos (who was recently part of Fuse, a group exhibition at RMIT) and Susan Matthews, to Wangaratta’s collections and manufacturing history.

Woven samples inspired by Tadao Ando's architecture.

Materials: Polyester fabrics, disperse dyes, polyester threads. Cotton fabric (backing).
Techniques: Transfer dyeing, machine piecing, free motion quilting procion dyeing (backing).

Ultimately, Andrea and Susan will be creating a textile work in response to their investigations. In the meantime, you can read about their creative journey on the Wangaratta Textile Project blog!

What a rich history of textile production in Wangaratta. It was great to read the blog and see that there are still mills producing cloth in Australia. Andrea and Susan's work is beautiful.
